Designing children’s playgrounds

If you’re a new designer who’s tasked to design a playground for kids, there are some pointers that you have to remember in order to make this work a success. You have to consider a lot of factors such as the overall theme of the playground, the materials you’re going to use, the age appropriate design, the place where you’re going to put it out, the safety of the playground, and all the other things you will have to weigh out along the way. You will definitely find this task very difficult if you will fail to understand the main purpose of having a playground in the first place. Designing children’s playground is not merely designing it; it has to serve it’s main purpose, which is, to enable children develop their physical, psychological, and social skills. You have to remember that playgrounds serve as a child’s stage where he/she can fully express his/herself by living out his/her imagination. It’s the happy place where the child can be a kid by pretending to be a brave knight, or a mighty pirate, or even a giant, ferocious ogre. It honestly has to be a magical place that brings out all the kid’s inner potential. Challenging, yes. However, this is highly attainable.

Never ever take for granted the value of free play

As aforementioned, a playground is a magical place for kids to become whoever or whatever they wanted to be, and that’s without adult supervision. You may see the playground as a tiring task that you have to do. However, you also have to be aware of the fact that you have the power to change a kid’s life by helping him develop his inner potential by being a kid in the playground that you created. Playgrounds allow children to be spontaneous and free to be a kid. It truly develops their social skills, their self-esteem, their confidence through playing with other kids their age.

Choose what’s fun for kids

When you purchase the age appropriate usual playground parts such as the swing, the rocker, or the slide, you will have to remember that children has three things in mind: to have fun, to be in the center of the play, to be in an interesting place. If your playground screams out fun in the mind of a child, then you won’t have to worry if it would be a hit for kids. However, if your playground is too thought of that it became boring and intimidating in the eyes of a child because of the gigantic pieces you have put altogether, don’t expect that a child would even visit it. Put yourself in the little shoe of a child. Let your imagination roam your unvisited wonderland when you were a kid. Let that creativity flow out of you. Be a kid to satisfy your primary clients in creating a playground– the kids.
